Industry Insight: NATO Deputy Secretary General Calls for Ambitious Cyber Defence Strategies at 2024 Conference

At NATO’s 2024 Cyber Defence Pledge Conference in The Hague on 17 May, Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană emphasised the urgent need for ambitious cyber defence strategies among NATO Allies. Geoană highlighted the escalating cyber threats posed by adversaries who increasingly defy international norms through cyber and hybrid operations. “There is no peace in cyberspace” Geoană declared, underscoring the critical nature of the cyber battlefield.

The Cyber Defence Pledge, initiated in 2016, has significantly contributed to strengthening the cyber defences of NATO Allies. This initiative has been crucial in bolstering national networks and infrastructures, enhancing NATO’s collective resilience against cyber threats. In the wake of the 2023 Vilnius Summit, further efforts have been made to develop a cyber ‘maturity model’ to optimise resource allocation and improve defence mechanisms.

Geoană stressed the importance of robust civil-military cooperation, advocating for closer collaboration with the tech industry. The Deputy Secretary General also welcomed the participation of eighteen NATO partner countries in the conference, noting that cyber defence is a priority for these nations. “I encourage all Allies to be open to these requests and help all of us become stronger and more resilient in cyberspace,” he urged.
